Speed

Hola, Maths professors!

Let's learn more about speed.

Speed is a special kind of rate. When an object is moving, the speed of the object is the rate of distance covered per unit time.

  • Speed limits on Singapore roads
  •

In a nutshell, speed is the distance travelled per unit time.
Do remember the following three formulas well.
Note that the units used in D, S & T must correspond to one another.

Three triangles show the three distance, speed and time equations. The first shows distance equals speed multipled by time, the second shows time equals distance over speed, the third shows speed equals distance over time.

Here's a video to help you remember how to get the formulas...

    Oh yes! Just a question.
There are many different types of units that can be used for speed e.g. m/s, km/h, m/min, cm/s
How do we know when which units are more appropriate?

And now, it's time to learn about the amazing wonders of Mother Nature! :)

The speeds indicated in the video above is the average speed. This is because the speed throughout a journey may not be constant all the time.

Average speed = total distance covered ÷ total time taken

The average speed is not the sum of two speeds divided by two.

    How our lungs work

Can't get enough of our lungs? Here's more.

With that, do compare your lung model (group work) with the actual human lungs again.
Draw up a comparison table to list the similarities and differences.

    Have fun!

    Plant Transport System

    Dear children,

Watch the video below to understand the plant transport system better.
Meanwhile, do complete the Science notes in your Activity Book (p30-32) too.

Recap what you have observed for the celery stalk last Wednesday.

What can you say about the tubes? Food-carrying tubes (phloem) or Water-carrying tubes (xylem)?

Another observation of the Water-carrying tubes? Do they overlap?

Infer what you have seen and what you have just learnt from the video/links above.
Hopefully these will help you in your correction before I see you again on Tuesday.

    Possible Story Ideas (The Journey)

    Hi children,

After the Gallery Walk, I hope you have gained more ideas for your Draft 1 - The Journey!

Collated ideas from the different groups

Choose an idea and plan your story using a plot diagram.
Then, with all the features of a narrative planned out, you may start on your Draft 1 of writing.

Do remember to develop on your content! The ideas shared are just the trigger. You need to develop the plot further such that there is a problem followed by a climax.

Can't wait to read your 1st draft!

    Love,
    Ms Yeo

REAL news: Ideas for your writing on "The Journey"

    Hello 5 Integrity,

Have you been following the local and world news closely?
    Hint: Public Transport

Do read on to find out more; alternatively, you might want to refer to your newspaper issued earlier on. It's on the front page news headline, you can't miss it!

Make use of the vocabulary words and you may want to incorporate these words as well as other ideas in your story plot!

First up, news close to our home:
    1) 3 April, Monday: HOUGANG MRT Station - Sealed off for 20 minutes

    2) 4 April, Tuesday: Russian Subway Blast

St. Petersburg metro explosion: At least 11 dead in Russia blast

Reading these news make me appreciate the importance of staying vigilant at all times as well as not taking safety for granted. We all have a part to play to keep ourselves safe.
    What do you think?

Here is another piece of news from quite a few years ago.
However, I think the issue on "Road sharing" between cyclists and drivers is still not really resolved. I do think Singaporeans need to show more tolerance to one another. After all, at the end of the day, we all want to be safe for ourselves and loved ones.

Hopefully these real news help motivate you to find out the happenings around us as well as keep your creative writing juices flowing! Have fun planning!

    Love,
    Ms Yeo
